We’ll start this walk from Charles Street, off Hope Street in Old Glossop. At the end of Charles Street is a footpath accessed through a wooden gate, the path is a little rocky and overgrown, follow the path around and it straightens out into a track passing Blakemoor Plantation on your left and through a couple of wooden gates. After 1km the track splits into two paths, take the path on the left and head up to the triangulation point of Cock Hill.
The first part of this walk passes two plantations of fir trees called Blakelow Plantation and the disused Low Quarry. The Glossop Low Quarry track continues to Cock Hill, 426m above sea level.
From Cock Hill head north east along a narrow path through the peat and heather. After 850m the ruins of Glossop Low Cabin can be seen.
Glossop Low Cabin is an old shooting cabin, just beyond the cabin is a line of grouse butts, specially constructed shooting positions built out of wood.
The route back is just the reverse. The two paths heading NE and SE both lead to the Pennine Way along Torside Clough so if you wanted to extend this walk (3.3km), a circular route could be added. The track heading west leads to Woodhead Road near Swineshaw Reservoir.
The extended walk to the Pennine Way along Torside Clough incorporates a number of boardwalks and takes you past Torside Castle or Harrop Moss, once a scheduled monument thought to be a timber hill-fort, descheduled in 1993 and now thought to be a natural mound (80m by 50m), presumably a glacial feature.
